Today's earworm: Tressie McMillan Cottom and essaying | #sol21 Day 10

Missed morning start, picking up early afternoon on what is basically the same strategy as yesterday: free writing until something comes to me or something already there re-surfaces. Reading -- email, news, social media, blog posts -- stirs the mix. Which will be today's earworm? Unlike yesterday, my reading did not start with comments.

Writing comes to/stays at the top, no surprise given the nature of the challenge.

Today's fresh ingredient is Tressie McMillan Cottom's Dolly Parton essay, her follow up essay on process and the comment threads.

I started reading Tressie when she was a grad school blogger. Now she's a sociology prof with books, podcast, essays and more to her credit. Her Substack, essaying is about personal essays and the process of writing them.

Random observations | #sol21 Day 9

Morning notes, just to see where reading/commenting on slices and my unconscious take me today. OK call it what it is ~ free writing.

Writing habits -- what, when, where and how do I habitually write? Mediums, modalities, genres. How has the shift to digital and social platform changed genres, spawned new ones, influenced individual writing practices?

around #Yuma, #Colorado & the Nation

…for #sol18. Today (not over yet) has been a long one that included a trip to the dentist for the next stage following last year's multiple molar extractions: two fillings and a mold taken for an upper bridge. Next, good-bye top incisors, especially the big crooked, snaggled one, attached memories not withstanding. After that, hello bridge.

By spring, I'll be willing to smile for a camera, participate visibly in a +Virtually Connecting Hangout, raise my hand to +Bryan Alexander for #FTTE Forum podium time.

#DigCiz 2017 & another #sol17 Tuesday

…and now to — at the very least — think about blogging in general and today's blog post in particular. For now, I'll read and comment on other Tuesday blog posts. As (or if) post ideas come to me, I'll throw them at the compose screen until one sticks. Templates are always an option. I've been saving ones I like but tend to forget about them come blogging time. I've been thinking about these today:

view of cabins at Slatter's Court, Davis CA

Develop "places along the way" post about Slatter's Court (above) where I lived 1993-99 when in grad school at UC Davis.

Reflect on #DigCiz 2017 and invite #TWTblog/gers to join the conversation. It started today with sharing #4wordstories on twitter to initiate "conversation about what good citizenship means in participatory spaces for #DigCiz" with elements of/questions about spectacle, participatory spaces, citizenship, authentic but respectful communication

Image result for digital citizenship, showing use of social and digital media on different platforms and devices

That led me to alternatives for citizenship/being a good citizen: Mensch, mentsh, Mentshlekhkeyt (Yiddish), Humanitas (Latin for the ultimate colonialist, imperial version), φιλανθρωπία (Greek philanthrôpía, loving what makes us human), humanist. Why not just plain human? What are the comparable words in other language families? Indigenous and other non-European languages?

Parts of this rambling reflection/thinking in text ended up in a 150 word comment (awaiting approval) on Bonnie Stewart's blog post, "The Crosshairs of the Split Hairs: #digciz"

So notes on what to blog turned into the post itself -- another ramble, disjointed and mostly about this iteration of the recurring #DigCiz conversation. Another time I can write another, separate post just about Slatter's Court, Davis and graduate school at UC Davis. Now to add another image and get this puppy posted.

Until March 2018 and the next month long challenge, Two Writing Teachers community bloggers share and comment on weekly slice of life posts every Tuesday by the same EST witching hour deadline. Writing habits and reasons vary but not the commitment or at least intent to blog and link a slice every Tuesday. If we miss the mark, there will be another next week. Read this week's Tuesday slices here.

endgame conversations…#sol17 Day 29/31

Image result for guerrilla gardening…but first another confession. At the start of the month, I confessed to being a dilatory slicer and not having completed a March challenge. With completion just around the corner, I confess that I'm not a K12 educator, although I have decades of teaching (swimming, riding, GED, ESL, college composition, literature and Spanish) under my belt. Now retired, I read, research and blog about education (among other topics), and, recently have taken to describing myself as a "guerrilla educator." The edu-equivalent of guerrilla gardening...

#YumaCO meeings…#sol17 Day 23/31

@ColoradoTrust Community Partnership meeting 6-9 pm tonight means the second early slice in a row because I can't be sure of being back in time to write and post. The formula is: evening meeting ➤ earlier than usual daily post rather than none..

PS (aside to readers new to the SoL series) "slicing" = writing slice of life blog post for SOLSC, a blogging challenge...more below.

goodbye work hello life

This blog has been a catch-all for online course posts, blogging challenges and other online writing projects. Figuratively speaking, Work and Life, its name reflecting its origin as back-up for a job I never got paid for doing, is an adjunct among blogs, a red-headed stepchild.

Then there are all the other social media. What a mess. First things first = start with blogging. This particular blog should be a personal blog and renamed to make it personal. I will do that. Maybe I even had that in mind when I created the blog. #DigiWriMo seems a good time to address all this, not that this post is an #altCV. Mine would be far weirder. Could this be preliminary notes toward one?

#SoL15 musings on moving, #clmooc, #adjunct blogging

…#RWTblog, #EdBlogNet…but still ignoring the other. Tumbling and social media writing don't count here.

Add procrastination. Tagged for both #sol15 and #adjunct. Check. Evasive multitasking by hashtag. Tagged for #clmooc, hold the apps. Check. There is a limit to how many/much I can wrap my mind around or juggle at one time -- and am already dropping too many as it is.

As usual, I have no idea where this will take me but now have a habit of starting with an image. Serendipity rules more often than not: what catches -- and pleases my eye. I saved slice images on the last hard drive: TWT logos, fruit, pizza, bread, etc. Dexter is the most popular result googling Slice of Life images. I haven't been in that kind of mood. Not yet.

This morning I had a topic in mind, no doubt about moving, book and other triage, but forgot.
